About Shine

Shine is a specialist charity supporting individuals and families living with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, NPH and related conditions. From before birth and throughout every stage of life, our mission is to empower, inform, and connect. We don’t just offer support, we walk alongside people, helping them to live their best lives.

Founded in 1966 as the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBAH), we’ve grown and evolved, and in October 2011, we became known as Shine. Today, we serve a community of over 75,000 individuals, families, professionals, and supporters across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Our purpose is to ensure that everyone affected has the information, networks, and support needed to thrive, whether that’s practical advice, emotional encouragement, advocacy, or connection with peers and professionals.

  • Information & Resources: Trusted, up-to-date, accessible guidance for families, individuals, carers, and professionals.
  • Networking & Community: Forums, events, and peer support so people can connect with others who understand their journey.
  • Advocacy & Awareness: We speak up for change, to improve policy, services, and public understanding.
  • Support Services: Tailored help for families, carers, and individuals, including guidance through life transitions.

We also maintain a strong commitment to safeguarding, ensuring that everyone who interacts with Shine is treated with respect, dignity, and safety.
